Sensory Motor Activities

The foundation of growth, development, and learning in a child starts with sensory and motor interaction with the world. The brain is built from the bottom up and this starts with movement and sensory exploration. Sensory stimulation and feedback drive the brain, but the motor system drives sensory stimulation—you can’t have one without the other. This is at the core of everything we do at Brain Balance Achievement Centers. Improving motor skills, sensory detection, and processing has to come before any higher learning, either behaviorally or academically, can take place.

All types of play, from fantasy to rough-and-tumble, have a crucial role in children’s development.

Play is the lens through which children experience their world, and the world of others. If deprived of play, children will suffer both in the present and in the long-term. With adequate play, children stand the best chance of becoming healthy, happy, productive members of society.

LevS Vygotsky describes play as leading development during childhood, and he discusses how in imaginary situations, children derive the utmost pleasure from subordinating themselves to the rules.

Given Vygotsky's emphasis on imagination, play offers an opportunity for a child to become a creator of rules and of imaginative play scenario.

0-6 months: Infants are fascinated with movement, sounds, and simple black and white visuals. They are discovering their own bodies, working on eye-hand coordination, reaching, and grasping. Age-appropriate toys for babies include: mobiles, rattles, busy boxes, and anything they can begin to grasp, swipe at, pull, kick, squeeze, or shake.

6-8 months: Older babies can hold small toys. They are learning about cause and effect and they will repeat activities over and over in order to master them. They also like to transfer toys from hand to hand and into and out of containers. Many of the same toys for infants will be used in new ways by older babies.
